    People of Culture (POC) is a for purpose organization that encourages Black, Latinx, Indigenous and other people of color to deepen their knowledge of self through meditation, travel and community.

  • What are the retreats like?
    Our retreats offer a unique blend of relaxation and personal growth, combining the essence of a vacation with the depth of a mission trip. Set in paradise, these retreats are designed for profound self-discovery. Our yoga sessions and workshops are thoughtfully curated, focusing on specific energy points such as the heart, roots, and throat, guiding you through a transformative journey.
  • Is this retreat for me?
    Deciding whether this is the right time for you to attend one of our retreats? Here are some questions to contemplate before applying: 1. Am I capable of sharing my personal space with people I may not know? Yes: I am comfortable sharing my personal space and interacting with strangers. No: I prefer my personal space and find it challenging to share with strangers. 2. Am I open to being vulnerable in a group setting? Yes: I am open to sharing my thoughts and emotions with others in a group setting. No: I find it difficult to be vulnerable and prefer to keep my emotions private in group settings. 3. Am I committed to showing up to all of the yoga and workshops? Yes: I am committed to attending all scheduled yoga sessions and workshops. No: I may miss some yoga sessions and workshops due to other commitments or interests. 4. How do I respond when things deviate from the plan? Well: I adapt well to unexpected situations and find solutions calmly. Not well: I struggle with unexpected changes and may become stressed or frustrated. 5. What currently brings me joy? I know: Engaging in creative pursuits, spending time with loved ones, or pursuing hobbies bring me joy. I don’t know: I find it challenging to identify activities or experiences that consistently bring me joy. 6. How do I typically engage in group settings? I love groups: I am sociable, enjoy participating in group activities, and easily connect with others. I dislike groups: I tend to be reserved in group settings, preferring solitary activities or one-on-one interactions. Our retreats are designed to provide a transformative and enriching experience, and being in the right mindset and comfort level contributes significantly to the journey.   • Who leads the trips?
    POC was founded by Shaëlle a Haitian multi-disciplinary artist living in Los Angeles. Shaëlle has a love for travel. Shaëlle led her first trip abroad her senior year of college to India. There her group brought and educational, agriculture and art program to the students of the Amar Jyoti school. Since then (9 years ago) Shaëlle has temporarily lived in Argentina, Haiti and Bali.   • What is included in trip cost?
    Each trip's offerings vary and are specific to that particular trip. However, below are what a typical POC trip includes: Transportation (from airport and to retreat activities) Shared or Private Room Workshops Breakfast Yoga Wifi Pool
  • What is the refund policy?
    Due to advance payments for accommodations and vendors, we regret that refunds are generally not possible, especially as the retreat dates approach. We appreciate your understanding as these arrangements are made in the best interest of all participants. Security Deposit Non refundable 7 days after payment Remaining Retreat Balance Non refundable after payment deadline Bali Retreat Payment Deadline: March 1, 2024 Emergency: We recognize that unexpected situations like emergencies, including deaths or pregnancies, may arise. If you find yourself in such a situation, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We will do our best to work with you and explore the possibility of applying your balance to a future POC retreat. Your timely communication will enable us to assist you more effectively. Thank you for your understanding. World Event: In the event of a significant global occurrence, such as a COVID-19 shutdown or a World War, necessitating the complete cancellation of the trip, attendees will receive a full refund. Regrettably, this situation arose in April 2020 when we had planned our Bali retreat. Everything was meticulously arranged, but we had to cancel in March as the world started shutting down. Let’s hope such circumstances do not repeat in the future!

  • What do I do incase of an emergency?
    The safety and well-being of our participants are our top priority. If you find yourself in an emergency situation, please follow these steps: 1. Contact the Retreat Leader: Immediately inform Shaëlle or the designated retreat leader about the emergency. They will assist you in contacting your emergency contact and provide necessary support and guidance. 2. Emergency Medical Attention: If you require medical attention, proceed to the nearest hospital or medical facility. Please ensure to carry your travel insurance information, specifically the Allianz Travel Basic Plan details, for reimbursement purposes. Having this information on hand will facilitate the medical process, and you can file a claim for any covered expenses through your travel insurance. 3. Document and Report: Document the details of the emergency and report the incident to the retreat leader. Timely reporting is crucial for appropriate action and assistance. 4. Stay Calm and Follow Instructions: It’s essential to remain calm and follow any instructions given by the retreat leader, medical professionals, or local authorities. Keeping a clear mind can help in managing the situation effectively. Please remember that your safety is our utmost concern, and we are here to assist you in any way possible during emergencies. We encourage all participants to familiarize themselves with the emergency procedures and contact information upon arrival at the retreat location.
